Remote sensing in support of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) policy development, implementation and evaluation

The MapX team, in collaboration with the UNEP Chemicals and Health branch and the Minamata Convention on Mercury, have collaborated in the development of a technical guidance document and a practitioners’ guide. Both documents have been designed to introduce how remote sensing (RS) technologies can support the elaboration of policies on artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) to meet the requirements of the Minamata Convention on Mercury. They present the multiple benefits and uses of RS technologies to support ASGM policy development, implementation and evaluation, and provide detailed information on RS possible contributions to elaborate and implement national action plans (NAPs) under the Minamata Convention. Additional case studies featuring ASGM activities were conceptualized and implemented in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Peru and in Colombia using the Open Data Cube technology and Google Earth Engine.
